Announced Wednesday, the Oasis is both shorter and thinner than 2014's Kindle Voyage, which means there's less space for a battery. It gets more than two weeks of battery life on its own, a sharp decrease from the Voyage, which claimed six weeks of life. To make up for that decrease, the Oasis includes a neat new accessory: a leather cover that doubles as a power source, extending the battery life for more than nine weeks.
It also comes with a new, larger price tag of $290.
The Oasis is the most significant Kindle redesign in four generations. Even though the E Ink touchscreen is the exact same size and resolution as the previous version, the 4.6-ounce device looks and feels significantly smaller.
The new shape tapers off to an impressively thin 3.4 mm on one side. The other edge is thicker for gripping, evoking a traditional book spine. The two buttons next to the screen let you flip pages one handed. An accelerometer lets the reader turn the device upside-down and automatically switches the button functions.
The contrast ratio is the same, and you can still flip pages by swiping the touchscreen. There is no warm night mode and the device isn't waterproof, but it still fits nicely in a Ziplock bag.

Huawei's P9
shahid ibrahim 03:43 mobiles, other devices, others, Smartphones No comments
The smartphone landscape is changing so fast that what worked a year ago would be a disaster today.
Every manufacturer deals with it in its own way: Apple is moving at its own pace, careful to add one marquee feature in each new iPhone. Samsung seems to love tossing in a dozen odd features in the hopes something will stick (although the company's toned down the gimmicks this year). The up and coming Chinese manufacturers just try to make a good looking, powerful phone and sell it cheap.
With its latest flagship P9 (and P9 Plus), Chinese smartphone maker Huawei — the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world according to IDC — is trying to out-Apple Apple. The P9 is an exceptionally well-built phone that sort of apes the iPhone aesthetic, but it's not cheap. And it has one very distinctive feature: dual cameras on the back.
I spent a week and a half with the P9 — the base model with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, in Mystic Silver — and the experience was very pleasant, but is it worth the 549 euro starting price?
The P9 is visually very similar to its predecessor, the P8, which is visually quite similar to the iPhone. However, with so many other manufacturers adopting the iPhone's "antenna lines" design, I wouldn't say the P9 is copying anyone. So while the design is elegant — tapered Gorilla Glass on the front and aluminum on the back — it's definitely not breaking any new ground.

Apple starts deploying Carekit for health apps
shahid ibrahim 04:23 mobiles, other devices, others, Smartphones No comments
Apple begins rolling out Carekit, its mobile software framework for health apps, today.
Apple announced the open-source software development platform last month with the aim to make it easier for developers to build health apps on iOS devices.
Starting today, Carekit will integrate with four iPhone apps, including two of the Glow family of apps Glow Nurture and Glow Baby; Start, an app for monitoring depression medication; and One Drop, a diabetes tracker.Carekit works in a similar way to Apple’sResearchkit, a tool enabling developers to pull in large amounts of research data over iOS devices. The Carekit platform integrates with health apps to help patients manage treatment and can also be used to help doctors monitor progress.
Developers choose from a variety of integrations from monitoring symptoms, sending images of a wound, or keeping an eye on a medication schedule.Carekit can help doctors keep tabs on patients but it also empowers the patient to watch their own progress over time and take action.
Iodine co-founder Thomas Goetz demonstrated how this might work on his Start app with a built-in drug adherence feedback loop. The adherence tool uses Carekit to nudge patients dealing with depression with information to help them understand how their medication should work as they continue taking it.
“Depression and pain medications don’t work one out of three times and using carekit can help determine if the medicine will work for you,” Goetz told TechCrunch.Glow’s Nurture and Baby apps integrate Carekit to send a PDF of progress to your doctor, partner or other caregivers. If your baby has had a low fever and a rash for a few days and you’ve been logging those symptoms on Glow Baby, the app uses Carekit to send that information to your physician with just a tap.
The apps could already send info to your care provider but Glow’s Jennifer Tye believes it’s now easier to do it with just one tap to send a PDF instead of clicking through, emailing and sending. It might not seem like much, but it’s probably something to sleep-deprived parents with a new baby.

Facebook Plans New Stock Class
SAN FRANCISCO — Mark Zuckerberg nurtured Facebook from a dorm room idea into the world’s biggest social network. Now the company is taking steps to ensure its founder remains in charge.
Facebook on Wednesday proposed a new class of stock, known as C shares, in a move meant to allow Mr. Zuckerberg to maintain control of the Silicon Valley company. The creation of the new class of shares allows the chief executive to preserve his voting power at Facebook, even as he begins an effort to give away the majority of his stock for charitable purposes.
Facebook said the move was “not a traditional governance model,” but it added that “Facebook was not built to be a traditional company.”
The proposal speaks to a very Silicon Valley ethos where company founders often reign supreme — and where corporate structures have shifted to accommodate that philosophy. Over the past decade, more tech companies have adopted two classes of stock so that their founders can cement their voting power at the firms. In 2012, Google announced that it was creating a third class of shares to prevent its founders’ voting power from diminishing.
Mr. Zuckerberg on Wednesday cited the Silicon Valley mantra of founders in explaining the new class of stock, calling Facebook a “founder-led company.” In a conference call, he added, “Facebook has been built on a series of bold moves. When I look out on the future, I see more bold moves ahead of us, not behind us.”
The social network on Wednesday also reported robust first-quarter earnings that show the results of Mr. Zuckerberg’s leadership. Facebook said sales rose 52 percent to $5.3 billion from a year ago, while profit increased to $1.5 billion, tripling from $512 million a year earlier. Excluding certain items, profit was 77 cents a share, far surpassing Wall Street expectations of 62 cents a share.

Next-Gen Wi-Fi Will Actually Connect the Internet of Things
There are plenty of blockades between now and the connected-device future that’s been so long on the horizon. One of these is Wi-Fi, which has limitations that keep connected devices from connecting quite as efficiently as they could. Now, there’s a plan in place to fix it.
The Wi-Fi Alliance, the organization that dictates and advances Wi-Fi standards, has announced the latest iteration of its increasingly indispensable technology. Called HaLow, it promises to double the range of standard 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connections, while also doing a better job of penetrating walls, floors, and other obstacles that can make your Wi-Fi sputter and skulk.
It manages this deftness and range by operating on the 900MHz band, a chunk of spectrum that’s better suited for small data payloads and low-power devices than the relatively intensive, battery-straining 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands on which most current Wi-Fi routers operate. To cut through the numbers and specs and standards for a moment: It’s Wi-Fi for smartwatches and Internet-enabled coffee makers and whatever other connected appliance might suit your deranged fancy.
“For a consumer, you might imagine someone who wants to deploy a water sensor in their basement to detect flooding or a motion sensor at the end of their driveway to warn them of someone arriving late at night,” says Kevin Robinson, Wi-Fi Alliance vice-president of marketing. “In both of these cases, Wi-Fi HaLow will deliver power-efficient connectivity to the home access point (and the Internet) despite the challenging environment caused by obstructions in the device’s path or ranges involved.”

Casio Smart Outdoor Watch: ETA April
The Casio Smart Outdoor Watch landed at CES and is the first Android Wear smartwatch to really diversify away from the mainstream. It's a million miles from another me-too everyday watch. The Casio Smart Outdoor Watch WSD-F10, to give it its full meaty moniker, is a waterproof, shockproof and vibration proof AW smartwatch that's certified to US military standards.
The 1.32-inch LCD touchscreen has an interesting twist - a second monochrome display that can be used instead of the colour panel to save battery life. Casio is promising a month of lifespan in this mode.

*design concept
“Form follows you”
A personal mobile communication device which lets you be free and fun. It is light, simple and carefree. You can change its form according to your needs during the day.
*target
It is targeted to the young consumers who are likely to be active and take place in a lot of different activities.
*why this target ?
Because they move and change place too much. They do a lot of different things during the day. So that’s what my design offers : to adjust to the moment, the place and the function.
*technologies that are used
It uses liquid battery, speech recognition, flexible touch screen, touch sensitive body cover which lets it understand and adjust to the environment. It has a simple programmable body mechanism so that it changes forms in different situations.
*the functionality of design
You dont have to carry it in your pocket or on your wrist. You can carry it anywhere, in anyform. You can roll it, bend it, put on your clothes like a clip. It also makes some form changes that makes it more ergonomical: i.e. when you want to talk on the phone, the body form turns into the form of the good old telephone. You can personalize these forms and record them. So it fits you the best in the way that you have chosen. The functions that it has also create a feeling of electronical pet, as it senses your moves, understand what you want, respond you in the best way. It learns you, to fit you better. Also e-motions lets you send forms to the other 888 users. It could be the shape of a heart or a small dance. This way you can talk without words.
E-motions… It means electronical motions that 888 has. You can send and receive forms from / to friends. You can send a heart shape to your girlfriend, so her telephone turns into an icon of heart. Or you can send a dancing form to your friends to call them to the party tonight. This is the fun side of the product. If we look from the functionality side, 888 is quite flexible. You can put it into your pocket, roll it and make it smaller, or put on your wrist when you want to make a video call on the go. If you want to talk like a normal telephone, there you have your telephone shape. We go through a lot of places and situations in the daily life, so it seems like one form is not enough.

Microsoft launches Windows laptop
Microsoft has launched a laptop dubbed the Surface Book, as part of a suite of new Windows 10 products.
It also showed off two new smartphones, an updated Surface tablet and a new fitness band.
Much is riding on the launches as chief executive Satya Nadella sets out to prove Microsoft can compete with its rivals.
Analysts said the new laptop may help revive the ailing PC market.
The laptop, Microsoft's first, was the highlight of a tranche of new products shown off at an event in New York.
It is designed to take on Apple's Macbook, with Microsoft directly comparing the products.
It said that, just as its Surface tablet was a hybrid between a tablet and a laptop, so the Surface Book would "reinvent categories".
Analysts seemed impressed.
"It is a highly innovative, flagship device that will act as a much-needed halo product for Windows 10 and the broader PC market and proves that innovation in personal computing is not just confined to Apple's Cupertino campus," said Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight.

Horizon Hobby Blade Chroma With CGO3 4K Camera
DesignThe Chroma shares some DNA with the Yuneec Typhoon Q500 4K. The two aircraft use the same CGO3 4K camera and gimbal, and both are controlled using the ST10+ remote control. The Chroma and its accessories are finished in white, and the aircraft is a bit smaller, as are its propellers. The power switch is on the top of the body (a definite plus), and the GPS module sits on a hinge that needs to be raised from the body before flight, presumably for a stronger signal.
Medical experts hope surgery live-streamed in VR will make healthcare fairer and boost training
Stretched out on a table in a large, bright operating theatre at the Royal London hospital, a patient is awaiting Shafi Ahmed’s first incision in a procedure that will remove cancerous tissue from his bowel. Around the table a team dressed in blue scrubs and face masks are gathered, exchanging the odd word, while cumbersome machines bearing bundles of wires hum gently in the background. Everyone is focused on the task in hand, getting ready to play their part. Except me.
Scrubless and without so much as a scalpel to pass to the surgeon, I am a mere spectator to this intricate event, a bystander gazing around the room in fascination while others labour at a life-changing task.
Not that the surgeons are bothered. Because although I feel like I am standing at the edge of the operating table, in reality I am sitting in my office chair.

So we're well into 2016, and the big phones have begun to arrive. The LG G5, with its modular design, was one of the darlings of MWC 2016 (alongside theSamsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, of course) and with the HTC One M10 less than a week away - and likely to be called the HTC 10 - there's a lot coming down the line.
If none of those take your fancy and you want the best phone right now, well, this is the place to be (although we would recommend waiting for the new phones to emerge to see if you can save some cash on 2015's models).
2020 vision: how the Mac will evolve over the next 5 years
Apple's line-up of computers was one of the things that put the company on the map. Back in 1984, Apple released the Macintosh, much to the amazement of the world. In 1998, the firm introduced a PC with a colourful body – a revolutionary idea amongst a sea of beige.
And in 2005, Apple started on its new design revolution which, over the past decade, has spread to almost every corner of the PC market, especially within PCs. Driven by the MacBook Air in 2010, Apple started a 'race to thin,' with manufactures designing new bodies of ever decreasing depth while their all-aluminium unibody desktops have spawned copies across the board.
Over the next five years through to 2020, it's clear that Apple isn't going to give up on the Mac line. Sales have, by and large, been outperforming the industry – which, overall, has been shrinking – for the past few years thanks to a slew of new hardware and software on a regular basis.New versions of OS X are unveiled annually at various Apple events, usually to coincide with releases of iOS. Apple held a 'Back to Mac' event in 2010, showing the company's continued commitment to the platform in an age that was rapidly becoming post-PC, to use a term coined by late CEO Steve Jobs.
The best GPS running watches
The best running watch or GPS sports watch is a personal choice and much depends on the amount of detail you want from your runs. Beyond just simple tracking and pace information, the latest watches will feed back everything from heart rate information to detailed observations of your running style. In short, GPS watches are becoming powerful tools in the runner's arsenal.
Essential reading: How to use your watch to be a better runner
Some are pricey, some more affordable, most have GPS and a few have full mapping. There's a handful with heart rate monitors built in and a clutch that'll even help out with your swimming and cycling needs too.
Of course, there's no one perfect watch, so we've highlighted our top pick below but followed up with other devices that have impressed during our tests and that might suit different budgets and preferences.
30,000 drones are patrolling the skies of America
In 2012, the FAA Reauthorization Act passed into law in America. This legislation was the result of a huge push by lawmakers and defence companies to massively expand the use of drones – making it far easier for federal, state, local police and other agencies to fly them in U.S. airspace. Not only that, but commercial entities would also have drone authorisation from 2015 onwards.
These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been used extensively in Afghanistan and other military operations. In domestic U.S. airspace, they are deployed mainly for border and counternarcotics surveillance, but also in a variety of other public safety missions, such as disaster relief efforts, locating missing climbers or hikers and combating forest fires.
However, concerns are raised over issues of privacy and civil liberties. Many drones feature highly advanced monitoring equipment, infrared, heat sensors and radar. Some have cameras able to scan entire cities and read a milk carton from 60,000 feet away. Others can intercept mobile texts and phone calls. There are even models equipped with tasers and rubber bullets.* In some cities, they are being used to monitor protests and to spy on citizens with no warrant or legal process.*
In 2012, there were already 7,000 operating drones in U.S. airspace. By 2020, this number has more than quadrupled to over 30,000.* Various other countries have been expanding their surveillance in recent years – Britain, for example, has seen a nearly 30-fold increase in high-definition CCTV cameras.*
The 5G standard is released
By 2020, the next major cellular wireless standard has been adopted.* This continues the trend seen since 1981 in which a new mobile generation has appeared roughly every decade. The 5G family of standards is a major leap from previous generations in terms of power and functionality. Among its key features are:
- Pervasive networks providing ubiquitous computing. The user can simultaneously be connected to several wireless access technologies and seamlessly move between them. These can be 2.5G, 3G, 4G or 5G networks, Wi-Fi, WPAN or any other contemporary access technology. Multiple, concurrent data transfer paths can be easily handled.
- Group cooperative relay. High bit rates are now available in a larger portion of the cell, especially to users in an exposed location in between several base stations. This is achieved by cellular repeaters, together with macro-diversity techniques (also known as group cooperative relay), as well as beam-division multiple access.
- IPv6, where a visiting care-of mobile IP address is assigned according to location and connected network.
- High-altitude stratospheric platform station (HAPS) systems, delivering high-speed Internet service to very large geographical areas.
- Wearable devices with AI capabilities, offering greater levels of user interaction and personalisation.
- One unified global standard with full compatibility, no matter what brand or model.
Texting by thinking
In addition to 5G, phones are now available with the option of texting by thought power alone.* This is achieved by a combination of eye-tracking technology and a sensor-mounted headset worn by the user. The headset contains a brain-machine interface which detects electrical brain waves and converts them into digital signals, then displays the resulting letters on-screen.*
Some high-end models can be used with glasses or visors featuring displays built into their lenses. This enables completely hands-free texting, creating a form of virtual telepathy. The process is rather slow at this stage, requiring a high degree of mental concentration. It is more of a novelty for now. However, advances in the coming years will enable smooth and fast interactions, revolutionising the world of communication.
