Xiaomi’s 4K Mi Box is Google’s newest Android TV device

Today's announcement of Google Home is likely to be the most exciting "living room" news that comes out of the company's annual developers conference, but that doesn't mean TV has been completely forgotten. Google today announced a bunch of new hardware partners for Android TV and Google Cast, its two solutions (just two!) for watching web content on TV screens.

One of these new partners is Chinese electronics company Xiaomi, which is announcing a new version of its Mi Box that will run on Android TV, support 4K, and will ship to the US. Earlier versions of Xiaomi's box were only available overseas, and supported HD video but not 4K. The new 4K Mi Box works with a Bluetooth remote equipped with voice recognition and also has built-in Google Cast tech so you can cast content from iOS and Android devices. Xiaomi hasn't said yet when the new box will be available or how much it will cost.

Google also said that new TVs from Sony Bravia and RCA will ship running Android TV, as well as a Sharp's Net Player. In Europe, Android TV will be available on Beko, Grundig, and Vestel TVs. And Google Cast will work with soon-to-ship TVs from Toshiba, Philips, Magnavox, Westinghouse, and Polaroid. The new TVs are expected to become available this summer.

Hyperloop the future of travel

There was a moment, an hour before an event last week, when 30 or so young fresh-faced people stood around their creation and posed for a group photo.

They were in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts. All around them, reminders of historic innovations that began with research at this legendary college.

As the photographer clicked away, I wondered - what place in history would this photograph have? Will we look back at these 30 smiles and say "that was the team that changed the world!"?

If that is to be the case, there is a long road ahead. And indeed, it is long roads that are the motivation for this project. The MIT team is one of several working on Hyperloop, a vision for rapid travel put forth by Silicon Valley's most interesting man, Elon Musk.

He says the commute from San Francisco to Los Angeles - currently a five hour drive or an hour of flying - could be cut to 30 minutes.

Mr Musk is the boss of Tesla and founder of SpaceX, and when he published in 2013 a white paper outlining a way to use airtight tubes to propel pods at speeds of up to 700mph (1130km/h), he set a challenge to anyone and everyone who wanted to try and build the technology.

Mr Musk isn't paying the firms, but he has committed to funding a series of tests. The hope is that these will happen in August this year. The target is that by 2021 humans will be travelling on Hyperloops around the world.

The MIT team is one of more than 20 non-commercial groups also designing a Hyperloop pod - with money coming from SpaceX in the form of a competition.

That was split over two phases - a design contest, which MIT won in January, and an on-track test coming up in the summer.

But it all could be a colossal waste of time. The barriers to Hyperloop becoming a reality are enormous - and it's not just about technology.

Part of any visionary's CV is the ability to ignore the naysayers and focus on your vision. If and when you succeed, everyone backtracks and says they knew you were a genius all along.

Elon Musk is the sort of chap that is used to people telling him he's wrong. When he set out to make electric cars appeal to petrolheads, he had a lot of people to convince - but somehow, and on the brink of bankruptcy, he got some investors on board.

With LiFi, data is transmitted by modulating the intensity of the light, which is then received by a photo-sensitive detector, and the light signal is demodulated into electronic form. This modulation is performed in such a way that it is not perceptible to the human eye.

LiFi is a category of Optical Wireless Communications (OWC). OWC includes infra-red and ultra-violet communications as well as visible light. However, LiFi is unique in that the same visible light energy used for illumination may also be used for communication.

The new Kindle Oasis

The wedge-shaped Kindle Oasis is a petite and pocketable new e-reader from Amazon that sacrifices a bit of battery life to fit in the palm of your hand.

Announced Wednesday, the Oasis is both shorter and thinner than 2014's Kindle Voyage, which means there's less space for a battery. It gets more than two weeks of battery life on its own, a sharp decrease from the Voyage, which claimed six weeks of life. To make up for that decrease, the Oasis includes a neat new accessory: a leather cover that doubles as a power source, extending the battery life for more than nine weeks.

It also comes with a new, larger price tag of $290.

The Oasis is the most significant Kindle redesign in four generations. Even though the E Ink touchscreen is the exact same size and resolution as the previous version, the 4.6-ounce device looks and feels significantly smaller.

The new shape tapers off to an impressively thin 3.4 mm on one side. The other edge is thicker for gripping, evoking a traditional book spine. The two buttons next to the screen let you flip pages one handed. An accelerometer lets the reader turn the device upside-down and automatically switches the button functions.

The contrast ratio is the same, and you can still flip pages by swiping the touchscreen. There is no warm night mode and the device isn't waterproof, but it still fits nicely in a Ziplock bag.

Huawei's P9

The smartphone landscape is changing so fast that what worked a year ago would be a disaster today.

Every manufacturer deals with it in its own way: Apple is moving at its own pace, careful to add one marquee feature in each new iPhone. Samsung seems to love tossing in a dozen odd features in the hopes something will stick (although the company's toned down the gimmicks this year). The up and coming Chinese manufacturers just try to make a good looking, powerful phone and sell it cheap. 

With its latest flagship P9 (and P9 Plus), Chinese smartphone maker Huawei — the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world according to IDC — is trying to out-Apple Apple. The P9 is an exceptionally well-built phone that sort of apes the iPhone aesthetic, but it's not cheap. And it has one very distinctive feature: dual cameras on the back.

I spent a week and a half with the P9 — the base model with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, in Mystic Silver — and the experience was very pleasant, but is it worth the 549 euro starting price?

The P9 is visually very similar to its predecessor, the P8, which is visually quite similar to the iPhone. However, with so many other manufacturers adopting the iPhone's "antenna lines" design, I wouldn't say the P9 is copying anyone. So while the design is elegant — tapered Gorilla Glass on the front and aluminum on the back — it's definitely not breaking any new ground.

Apple starts deploying Carekit for health apps

Apple begins rolling out Carekit, its mobile software framework for health apps, today.

Apple announced the open-source software development platform last month with the aim to make it easier for developers to build health apps on iOS devices.

Starting today, Carekit will integrate with four iPhone apps, including two of the Glow family of apps Glow Nurture and Glow Baby; Start, an app for monitoring depression medication; and One Drop, a diabetes tracker.Carekit works in a similar way to Apple’sResearchkit, a tool enabling developers to pull in large amounts of research data over iOS devices. The Carekit platform integrates with health apps to help patients manage treatment and can also be used to help doctors monitor progress.

Developers choose from a variety of integrations from monitoring symptoms, sending images of a wound, or keeping an eye on a medication schedule.Carekit can help doctors keep tabs on patients but it also empowers the patient to watch their own progress over time and take action.

Iodine co-founder Thomas Goetz demonstrated how this might work on his Start app with a built-in drug adherence feedback loop. The adherence tool uses Carekit to nudge patients dealing with depression with information to help them understand how their medication should work as they continue taking it.

“Depression and pain medications don’t work one out of three times and using carekit can help determine if the medicine will work for you,” Goetz told TechCrunch.Glow’s Nurture and Baby apps integrate Carekit to send a PDF of progress to your doctor, partner or other caregivers. If your baby has had a low fever and a rash for a few days and you’ve been logging those symptoms on Glow Baby, the app uses Carekit to send that information to your physician with just a tap.

The apps could already send info to your care provider but Glow’s Jennifer Tye believes it’s now easier to do it with just one tap to send a PDF instead of clicking through, emailing and sending. It might not seem like much, but it’s probably something to sleep-deprived parents with a new baby.

Facebook Plans New Stock Class

SAN FRANCISCO — Mark Zuckerberg nurtured Facebook from a dorm room idea into the world’s biggest social network. Now the company is taking steps to ensure its founder remains in charge.

Facebook on Wednesday proposed a new class of stock, known as C shares, in a move meant to allow Mr. Zuckerberg to maintain control of the Silicon Valley company. The creation of the new class of shares allows the chief executive to preserve his voting power at Facebook, even as he begins an effort to give away the majority of his stock for charitable purposes.

Facebook said the move was “not a traditional governance model,” but it added that “Facebook was not built to be a traditional company.”

The proposal speaks to a very Silicon Valley ethos where company founders often reign supreme — and where corporate structures have shifted to accommodate that philosophy. Over the past decade, more tech companies have adopted two classes of stock so that their founders can cement their voting power at the firms. In 2012, Google announced that it was creating a third class of shares to prevent its founders’ voting power from diminishing.

Mr. Zuckerberg on Wednesday cited the Silicon Valley mantra of founders in explaining the new class of stock, calling Facebook a “founder-led company.” In a conference call, he added, “Facebook has been built on a series of bold moves. When I look out on the future, I see more bold moves ahead of us, not behind us.”

The social network on Wednesday also reported robust first-quarter earnings that show the results of Mr. Zuckerberg’s leadership. Facebook said sales rose 52 percent to $5.3 billion from a year ago, while profit increased to $1.5 billion, tripling from $512 million a year earlier. Excluding certain items, profit was 77 cents a share, far surpassing Wall Street expectations of 62 cents a share.

There are plenty of blockades between now and the connected-device future that’s been so long on the horizon. One of these is Wi-Fi, which has limitations that keep connected devices from connecting quite as efficiently as they could. Now, there’s a plan in place to fix it.

The Wi-Fi Alliance, the organization that dictates and advances Wi-Fi standards, has announced the latest iteration of its increasingly indispensable technology. Called HaLow, it promises to double the range of standard 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connections, while also doing a better job of penetrating walls, floors, and other obstacles that can make your Wi-Fi sputter and skulk.

It manages this deftness and range by operating on the 900MHz band, a chunk of spectrum that’s better suited for small data payloads and low-power devices than the relatively intensive, battery-straining 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands on which most current Wi-Fi routers operate. To cut through the numbers and specs and standards for a moment: It’s Wi-Fi for smartwatches and Internet-enabled coffee makers and whatever other connected appliance might suit your deranged fancy.

“For a consumer, you might imagine someone who wants to deploy a water sensor in their basement to detect flooding or a motion sensor at the end of their driveway to warn them of someone arriving late at night,” says Kevin Robinson, Wi-Fi Alliance vice-president of marketing. “In both of these cases, Wi-Fi HaLow will deliver power-efficient connectivity to the home access point (and the Internet) despite the challenging environment caused by obstructions in the device’s path or ranges involved.”

Microsoft launches Windows laptop

Microsoft has launched a laptop dubbed the Surface Book, as part of a suite of new Windows 10 products.

It also showed off two new smartphones, an updated Surface tablet and a new fitness band.

Much is riding on the launches as chief executive Satya Nadella sets out to prove Microsoft can compete with its rivals.

Analysts said the new laptop may help revive the ailing PC market.

The laptop, Microsoft's first, was the highlight of a tranche of new products shown off at an event in New York.

It is designed to take on Apple's Macbook, with Microsoft directly comparing the products.

It said that, just as its Surface tablet was a hybrid between a tablet and a laptop, so the Surface Book would "reinvent categories".

Analysts seemed impressed.

"It is a highly innovative, flagship device that will act as a much-needed halo product for Windows 10 and the broader PC market and proves that innovation in personal computing is not just confined to Apple's Cupertino campus," said Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight.

Scrubless and without so much as a scalpel to pass to the surgeon, I am a mere spectator to this intricate event, a bystander gazing around the room in fascination while others labour at a life-changing task.

Not that the surgeons are bothered. Because although I feel like I am standing at the edge of the operating table, in reality I am sitting in my office chair.
